JOF 2018 summer interns were enthusiastic and hard-working
“Interning for the Jackson Orthopedic Foundation is a privilege.”
“[The preceptors] were all extremely enthusiastic about what they did and would answer any question in great detail.”
“I learned that I definitely want to go into a career in musculoskeletal health.”
—Comments from 2018 JOF summer interns
The 2018 cohort of 8 summer interns was an outstanding group. Each week, the students shadowed a clinical preceptor to learn about their work and the various treatments they employ in their practice. Each intern wrote an annotated essay describing what they learned.
In addition, the students gathered weekly for a clinical conference at JOF’s offices. Presentations and discussion covered these areas:
• orientation to JOF, with Kathleen Geier, DNP, and the Motion Analysis Research Center at Samuel Merritt University, with Dr. Stephen Hill, PhD;
• functional anatomy of the hip and knee, conditions and treatment, with Kathy Geier;
• musculoskeletal history and physical examination, with AJ Benham, DNP;
• how to read a spinal x-ray, with Peter Slabaugh, MD; and
• fracture evaluation and treatment, with Kathy Geier, and splinting and other durable medical equipment (DME), prescription and use, with Jacob Geier, BSc, and Briana Felix, ERT.
The final class project was an informational video or public service announcement (PSA). The shorts will be shown at JOF’s 20th anniversary benefit event on November 4.
