Musculoskeletal conditions are among the most common reasons people seek care, yet many primary care clinicians receive limited training to diagnose and manage these conditions with confidence. At Jackson Orthopedic Foundation, our mission is to close this MSK care gap by equipping clinicians and future healthcare professionals with practical, evidence-based education that improves care where it is needed most.
For more than 27 years, we have focused on education as a catalyst for better outcomes. By strengthening clinical skills, supporting professional growth, and inspiring the next generation, we help improve patient care, support stronger practices, and contribute to healthier communities.
Why musculoskeletal education matters
1 in 2 U.S. adults lives with a musculoskeletal condition, including 3 in 4 adults aged 65+
Trauma, back pain, and arthritis are among the leading causes of physician visits, emergency department visits, and hospital care
Musculoskeletal disorders are projected to increase by 115% by 2050, driven by aging populations and chronic disease
Clinician shortages delay care for thousands, worsening pain, disability, and healthcare costs
These realities place growing pressure on primary care and on the clinicians who serve as the first point of contact for patients with musculoskeletal concerns. An added challenge is that many clinicians receive limited formal training in MSK assessment and management, leaving them without the skills or confidence needed to care for these patients effectively in primary care settings.
This gap can contribute to delays in care and unnecessary referrals to specialists, increasing costs while patients wait longer for relief.
JOF is working to close the gap
Our work focuses on improving musculoskeletal care today while building capacity for the future through education and mentorship:
Educating today’s clinicians through nationally accredited courses that build the skills and confidence needed to manage common musculoskeletal conditions in primary care
Preparing future healthcare leaders through the Healthcare Immersion Program, which gives students early, hands-on exposure to real clinical settings
Improving care now and for the future by reducing unnecessary referrals, shortening delays, and helping patients receive effective MSK care when and where they need it
